The Dispensary Grand-Opening Playbook: What Should Your Screens Show on Day One?

A dispensary grand opening is the one day you're guaranteed a room full of first-timers — and almost none of them owe you a second visit. What they see on your screens in the first thirty seconds does more work than anything else in the building: the opening special, the "here's how this works" explainer, and the reason to come back. Get those three things right on day one and you've bought yourself a customer. Get them wrong and you've hosted a very expensive open house.

Here's the playbook, and why the timing matters in Florida right now.

The bar is set by operators with 170 stores

On Friday, July 24, Trulieve opens its newest Florida dispensary in Marco Island with a full grand-opening production: specials, discounts, partner giveaways. And the offers don't stop at the balloon arch — every first-time guest at any Florida Trulieve gets 60% off, and veterans get 20% off every order. That's the machine a new store opens against: 170 Trulieve locations statewide, Curaleaf just opening its 74th, and 769 approved dispensing locations across Florida as of mid-July.

Your customers have been to those openings. When you open your doors, they're comparing yours to Trulieve's — whether that's fair or not.

The good news: nothing in that playbook requires an MSO's marketing department. It requires knowing what goes on the screens.

The day-one screen playbook

The opening offer, everywhere, matching the register. Big operators lead with a number ("60% off your first visit") because it's the one thing everyone remembers. Whatever yours is, it belongs on every screen in the store — and it has to match what rings up at the POS. Day one is exactly when a mispriced special turns a first impression into a refund conversation.

A "first time here?" loop. In a state adding more than 1,000 new patients a week (937,501 active cards and counting), a big share of opening-day traffic has never bought from a dispensary before. A short rotating explainer — how ordering works, what the categories mean, what to ask a budtender — does the greeting your slammed staff can't.

The reason to come back. Loyalty program, first-visit-to-second-visit offer, next week's promo calendar. Opening-day traffic you don't re-book is just a crowd.

Auto-hiding what sells out. Grand openings are stockout machines. A printed menu is wrong by 2 p.m.; a POS-synced menu quietly drops the sold-out SKU and nobody stands in line for a product that's gone.

Why this matters beyond July 24

Florida is about to see a wave of first days. The state's 22 new MMTC licenses are still working toward a final order — an administrative law judge recommended score adjustments for eight applicants in May, so the final winner list could even shuffle — but whenever it lands, every one of those licensees faces a string of grand openings, each one against the 170-store standard.

The takeaway

You only get one day one per store. The operators who treat it as a merchandising plan — offer, education, return hook, live inventory — convert a crowd into a customer base. The ones who treat it as a party get a great Instagram post.

Screens are the cheapest way to look like a 170-store operator on your first morning. See how GreenScreens works or get a demo — day-one setup is kind of our thing.
